‘Difficult’ rocks are rocks where a single test is unable to yield parameters appropriately descriptive of a reasonably sized volume for modelling or prediction purposes. Examples of such rocks are fractured basement rocks or karstic environments.

John Black will describe how to view, conceptualise, test and parameterise such rocks. In the process, he will explain why ‘hot-dry-rock’ is unlikely to work, the appearance of vein ore deposits, why borehole tests in fractured rocks often appear to be clogged and why Discrete Fracture Network models invariably over-estimate.
