This series is aimed at a broader audience than our other book series. Publications appeal to the informed amateur, to the engineering geologist undertaking a project in the area or to the researcher wanting a general overview of the geology.
Series format
The page size is: 275 mm deep by 210 mm wide. Maximum final size of illustrations: 236 mm deep by 176 mm wide. Single column width 84 mm. It is possible to have 1½ column figures (120 mm) with the caption at the side.
There are about 1,000 words per page.
The type size and layout is very similar to JGS, but there are no abstracts and the authors’ addresses are given at the front of the book.
Figures are numbered within a chapter, so that Fig.1 of Chapter 2 will be Figure 2.1.
References are at the end of each chapter in new volumes (although this is not the case with earlier ones).
Submission
Papers should be sent to the editor of the volume. Unless otherwise instructed, you should submit three copies of the paper together with good-quality photocopies of line drawings. Prints of photographs should be of good enough quality to enable the referees to assess their usefulness. Some editors choose to handle submissions by email, and in such cases you should follow instructions provided by the editor.
You should provide a complete reference list for your paper.
Refereeing and editing
The volume editors will send your paper to at least two referees. The volume editors will handle the papers through the reviewing and scientific editing procedure and deliver the finalized scripts for the volume to the Publishing House in one batch. We expect the reviewing and editing procedure to take about five to six months - but this is dependent upon referees and schedules of the scientific editors.
Co-reviewing
GSL supports co-reviewing across its portfolio of publications. In co-review, invited reviewers have the option to involve a co-reviewer (often a junior colleague, for training purposes) in completing their report. All peer reviewers for GSL publications are expected to follow the Society’s ethical guidelines, including confidentiality of peer review.
Production
Once the complete project is with the Publishing House, a production editor will be allocated to the book. The production editor will write to the corresponding authors notifying them of when proofs are due to be dispatched and if there are any problems or costs to be incurred.
The paper will be copyedited and then sent to an external typesetter. You will be sent two copies of the proofs. We do not generally send revised proofs to authors. The production process takes about six to eight months from receipt of the final chapter.
Colour costs
From 2018 there will be no charges for colour figures.
What do authors get?
Corresponding authors receive a free PDF, which they can pass on to their co-authors, and all authors will receive one copy of the volume. (If there are numerous authors on each chapter, the total numbers of free copies may be limited. This will have been agreed in the contract with the editor)
