Carbon on Carbon: Carboniferous Drawing Class
In spring 2019 we were delighted to hold two fossil drawing classes in the Upper Library, led by artist and geologist Emma Jude.
As part of the Society's 2019 Year of Carbon, participants were invited to travel back in time to the Carboniferous Period and learn about life on Earth over 300 million years ago, before drawing carboniferous fossils using charcoal.
50 people took part over two evenings in April and May, producing some wonderful creations and learning lots of new techniques from Emma, who was on hand to offer one-to-one guidance as well as teaching the group as a whole.
The fossils, on loan from the Natural History Museum and British Geological Survey, included corals, brachiopods, crinoids, bivalves, club moss and ferns. Find out more - Fossils from the Carboniferous Period
